Mig Arc Welding:

Arc welding involves the use of high voltage electricity to generate sufficient heat to make a weld. A number of different types of arc weldig exist, but MIG is the most common and universally applied method.  The factor and differentiates the different types of arc welding is the method used to create the gas shield.

The gas shield can be created in a number of different ways but in the case of MIG welding a tank filled with a mixture named Metal Inert Gas is employed.  The gases used can vary but they always contain the property that they will not react with or contaminate the metal/ weld in any way.

Mig Welding - How It Works:

MIG welding, sometimes referred to as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), is a process that uses a continuously fed solid electrode, an externally supplied shielding gas and electrical power to melt the electrode and deposit the molten material in the weld joint.

The heat generated by the electrical short circuit and the non-reactive gas melts the metal and allows them to mix together. Then, when the heat is removed, the metal begins to cool and solidify forming a new piece of fused metal.  Mig welding is useful and has a number of advantages.  It can be used to weld many different types of metals including: stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, nickel, magnesium and silicon bronze.

Advantages of Mig Welding:

  • MIG is Fast - it produces High Quality Welds Quickly
  • All-Position Welding Capability
  • Can Join a Wide Range of Metals
  • Gas Shield Protects the Arc & Alloying Metals
  • Can Join Metals of Varying Thicknesses
  • Good Weld Bead
  • Produces Minimum Weld Splatter
