RELAY SWITCH CIRCUIT
A relay switch is an electrically operated switch that is used in applications that require the control of a circuit by a low-power signal, where the control and controlled circuits must be electrically isolated from one another. Relay circuit switches are found in most vehicles driving along our roads today. They are most commonly used to enable a low amperage circuit switch On or Off a higher amperage circuit. The most frequent example of this is probably the switching on of the vehicle's head lights.
RELAY CIRCUIT APPLICATIONS
Relay switches should be used in situations when a heavy current is being switched. for example - a heated wind screen, car horn or a starter solenoid. A Relay should be included in this event to protect the switch and the cable. Relays allow a greater current load to be controlled by a lighter current switch at the facia. They also serve to reduce voltage drops where long connections/ cabling are involved.

CHANGEOVER RELAYS - HOW THEY WORK
Automotive relays are located in the majority of modern vehicles on the road today.
For the most part they are employed to allow a low amperage circuit switch on or off a higher amperage circuit. One of the most common applications for a Relay Switch Circuit is found in the mechanism used to turn on the headlights.
If the headlights were directly wired to the headlight switch the amp rating of the switch would be exceeded and there would be significant risk of causing irreparable damage such to the circuit - such as melted wires/ electrical fire. A relay switch circuit is a safer circuit. Relays can also be employed to facilitate the switching of multiple components at the same time using a single output.
